A Little About Me…..

As I sit here writing this “About the Artist” statement, I wonder if anyone really reads these, or for that matter, does anyone really care?  So, instead of me rambling on telling you how I was pushed out of the womb gripping a crayon, with paint coursing through my veins, I thought I might do something a little more interesting.  At least I think it will be more interesting, and I hope you do too.

As I am sure you have guessed, I love creating, painting, and drawing, but I led a charmed and misdirected life during my youth.  Instead of following my passion (maybe it really wasn’t my passion when I was in my 20’s), I partied, got married, had a baby, and settled down.  Eventually I did get a 9-5 job and that was that for several decades of my existence.  Of course, as many people do, I did dabble in art when I wasn’t changing diapers, fixing dinners, or doing everyday life stuff.  But I confess, art did take the back burner.

Speed forward 30 years, 2 divorces, several moves, and I found myself living in Puerto Rico with my “keeper” husband (a long story for another day), no friends, not able to speak Spanish (I took French and German in school duh), and with lots of time on my hands.  So, I reverted to my comfort zone – art.   I started painting, and drawing, and painting some more.  I can’t even begin to tell you how frustrating my journey has been.

Over the years, I submitted my regular watercolor paintings to several watercolor societies (they shall go unnamed for now), only to be REJECTED again and again.  I could visualize what I wanted to paint in my head, I just couldn’t translate that onto the paper.  As I mentioned, I suffered rejection after rejection, (and yes, I took it personally) which finally resulted in completely stopping again – and I thought, “ah, it’s a fun hobby.”

Then, COVID induced the creative entrepreneur in me to rise again – and here I am.  This time, I decided to throw caution to the wind.  I have read a gazillion books and have taken as many classes as possible on how to paint, technique, composition blah, blah, blah.  This time, I was determined to find a way to paint that is joy inducing instead of making my hair fall out with frustration.

I was fascinated watching acrylic pouring artists do their witchery on TikTok and Instagram, and after taking a wax painting class, I thought, this is for me. Countless hours were spent researching how to pour paint, and still achieve a balance between realistic, abstract, and loose paintings. Eventually, I took the plunge – both hands and both feet.

Now, I wish I could tell you; it was all sunshine and rose petals from there.  It wasn’t.  However, if I am anything, I am persistent, and I just kept pouring and pouring and pouring.  Most likely I could have funded a small village with the money I spent on paper and paints (another reason this hubby is a keeper).  Little-by-little my technique developed, and my paintings got stronger and (in my humble opinion) better.  Each day, I remind myself, just show up at the paper, and be the tool of the mighty Creator.  He who created the earth and the universe and all that is in it (whoever that is) surely, he can use me to splash around some paint and make a beautiful painting.

Okay, I am sure you are now bored to tears as I have rambled on about me – now lets talk about you and why I think you will like, even perhaps love, my work. . . read on.

If you are tired of seeing paintings of oceans, mountains, flowers, and fruit, whatever the medium, you are in the right place.  One of the most fascinating steps in my technique, is revealing the painting at the end of the pouring process.  It is always a surprise, sometimes it’s a good surprise, sometimes not so good, but a surprise, nonetheless.    Only using three colors (I know it’s hard to believe) I think you will find it amazing how vibrant and colorful my paintings are.  You can get lost looking at the beautiful combinations of color that are created – not by me, but by allowing the water and the paints to work together on their own accord.

Because this process is a process of layering, I use a liquid rubber which protects each previous layer.  The result is a big sheet of rubber, which I then peel off – like peeling a sunburn, revealing the painting beneath.  No painting can ever be duplicated, and each painting is a unique one-of-a-kind creation.

My paintings are not for people who love standard, classical watercolor.  Rather, these paintings will appeal to someone who embraces vibrant, unusual, different, and uncommon artwork.  Each painting is like a person, the more you look within it and get to know it, the more the painting will reveal to you.  You will discover the good, the bad, mystery, secrets, and excitement.  Experiencing one of my paintings is never dull.    If this describes your taste in art, I do hope you will come with me on this artistic journey.  My art will add color and pizzazz to your life, and I am pretty fun myself…. let’s be friends.
